Artist David Syre, in collaboration with Ellsworth Gallery, is pleased to announce Soul Maps: The Journey Evolves, an exhibition of approximately 25 paintings and drawings. The Grand Opening, Sept. 14 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm, will occur at the Ellsworth Gallery located at 215 East Palace Avenue. The exhibition will remain on view from Sept. 14 - 29, Wednesday through Sunday, 11am - 6pm.

A selection of paintings and drawings inspired by the artist’s travels and his significant connection to Tierra del Fuego Province and its original inhabitants, the Ona, will be shown alongside a video and installation entitled Ona Spirit. The exhibition is curated by Argentine curator, Ana Palacio.

David's artworks are like performances. They are records of performances. They call forth a discrete period of time and they also launch the viewer into that mystical world where time expands and contracts and becomes contingent on space.

Don Kennell , Artist

Syre is a lifelong artist who began painting seriously later in life. His artworks are intuitive abstract expressions of his interior being influenced by his lifelong pursuit of spiritual evolution and a deep connection to place.

"David’s artworks are like performances. They are records of performances. They call forth a discrete period of time and they also launch the viewer into that mystical world where time expands and contracts and becomes contingent on space." -  Artist Don Kennell

Throughout 2018 Syre exhibits in France, the United States, and Argentina—shows united by a common theme: the road travelled by the artist. In Nice (May) the exhibition explored paths walked during his lifetime; Santa Fe (September) the path that leads from origin to illumination; and Buenos Aires (November) invites viewers to walk along experiences of love and compassion. Each destination and exhibition ultimately leads to "The Peace Trail," the artist's monumental land art project in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.

About David Syre:

Self-taught artist, David Syre grew up along the Nooksack River. The son of Norwegian agricultural parents, he exhibited a remarkable resilience that would be emblematic of his life— overcoming polio at age four, going on to compete in marathons as an adult and building a successful business. Although a talented child artist, art was deemed an unacceptable career. Later in life, David rediscovered his creative passion, fulfilling his childhood dream of painting. While in France, a chance meeting several years ago boosted David’s confidence in his renewed artistic practice. Syre paints at his studio on the site of his family’s 100-year-old farm in view of the Canadian Cascade Mountains. He is prolific, inexhaustible; his creativity and production are boundless. Spirituality is the core of Syre’s artistic and life journey. He follows an independent path, embracing love, forgiveness, compassion and hope as universal guiding principles. About the Peace Trail:  The Peace Trail is a significant and monumental land art project: the construction of a trail in Tierra del Fuego at the southernmost extreme of the South American Continent. The Peace Trail will join two oceans, the Atlantic and the Pacific. People from all parts of the world will be able to walk along this path marked by a spiritual intention. The Trail is a place where nature, as well as installations of art-- all along the way--will create an atmosphere for visitors to share in a transcendental experience.
