After traveling over 10,000 miles, a team of thirty artisans has arrived in Seattle from Zigong, China. Using a craft handed down from family to family for over 2,000 years, these skilled lantern-makers will transform the Washington State Fair Events Center into a nighttime spectacular of light and color over the next month. PRODUCED BY PINNACLE PRODUCTIONS, The Lantern Light Festival is a six-week production featuring massive lanterns, inspiring performances, and a variety of food.

The lanterns are handmade, starting with full-size sketches. Steel rods are cut, bent and welded to create the frames, which are filled with LED lights, and then covered with brilliantly colored silk-like fabric. Each lantern theme typically takes four weeks to complete.

Hundreds of lanterns will illuminate the night, featuring a 400-foot-long Dragon, a 30-foot-tall Panda, lantern tunnels, holiday themes, and animals. “Each festival features some lanterns created specifically for the host city,” says Sanjay Syal, President & CEO of Pinnacle Production Group. “Themed lanterns for Seattle include the Space Needle, Peach Trees.”

In addition to seeing the gigantic lanterns, the festival promises fun for the whole family, with Chinese acrobats, a Wishing Tree, and live music. Activities for children include mining for emeralds, inflatable mazes and obstacle courses, and Dragon rides.

The event runs from November 24 to January 7, 2018, Thursday to Sunday, 5:00 pm to 11 pm, Washington State Fair Events Center, 110 9th Ave SW, Puyallup, WA 98371. Open every night from December 14 to January 1. Ticket prices range from $18 to $23, with activity package and group pricing available.

The History of the Lantern Light Festival

Over 2,000 years ago in China, Emperor Hanmingdi ordered that lanterns be lit to show respect to Buddha on the fifteenth day of the first Chinese lunar month. The festival traditionally ends the Chinese New Year period, marking the return of spring and symbolizing the reunion of family.
