About the Baby Shower
The opera offers a unique experience of a 10-person all female cast, ranging from contralto to coloratura. FSO alum, Victoria Benson will lead the ensemble as the overwhelmed hostess, Tracy.
“Baby Shower depicts a contemporary American celebration with some very recognizable family members and friends, all of whom have a back story that is revealed during the lead-up to the arrival of the guests, in the interchange between the participants and in the aftermath of the out-of-control proceedings. But what can be mended among family and friends is achieved by the inspiring lyrical ending to this comic romp through the incivilities in human relationships.” Bruce Trinkley, composer.
About Fresh Squeezed Opera Company
Founded in 2013 by Smith College Alumnae Maggie Rascoe and Jillian Flexner, and Lee Braun, the Fresh Squeezed Opera Company rises to meet a great need of the contemporary "classical" music community. Every year, young artists write more new music; and every year fewer organizations can provide them with the means of production for the increasing volume of works. We dedicate ourselves to providing composers with a platform to present their new music. To learn more about our company, please visit www.freshsqueezedopera.com.
About the Composer:
Bruce Trinkley is Professor Emeritus of Music at Penn State University where he taught composition, orchestration and opera literature and conducted the Penn State Glee Club for thirty-five years. A native of Pittsburgh, he attended high school in Los Angeles, and received degrees in composition from Columbia University where he studied with Otto Luening, Jack Beeson and Charles Wuorinen. His concert works include Santa Rosalia, a cantata inspired by paintings of the Colombian artist Fernando Botero and filmed for PBS; and Mountain Laurels, a choral symphony written for the centenary of State College, Pennsylvania with texts by central Pennsylvania poets. Eve's Odds, a comic chamber opera based on Genesis, won the National Opera Association’s 1999 Chamber Opera Competition. Cleo, a chamber opera about making of the epic film Cleopatra, won the Competition in 2001. York: the Voice of Freedom, a fulllength opera about the life of the only African American on the Lewis and Clark Expedition, was premiered by the Penn State Opera Theatre in 2002 and was filmed by WPSX for broadcast on PBS stations. He and his writing collaborator, Jason Charnesky, have also written two operas for young people, The Prairie Dog That Met the President and Chicken Little. Recent premieres include Saint Thomas the Carpenter, a sacred drama, in San Antonio in January 2011 and Christmas for King Midas at Jacksonville State University in December 2014. A new set of songs, The Sylvan Cycle, was premiered at the Song Collaborative Consortia at West Texas A&M University in October 2013. Major stage works can be viewed at www.Trinkley.blogspot.com.
