New Book by Kate K. Lund, Psy.D. Outlines Seven Key Pillars to Help Build Confidence in Children as They Cope With Everyday Encounters

Seattle-based psychologist and author Dr. Kate K. Lund has released Bounce: Help Your Child Build Resilience and Thrive in School, Sports and Life, a book that fills a critical need for parents, educators and anyone one who has an interest in helping children to become resilient and realize their full potential. The #1 international best-seller in eight education/parenting categories, highlights Dr. Lund’s groundbreaking approach to helping children overcome everyday challenges. Based on her more than 15 years of experience as a clinical psychologist and performance coach, the book presents a vision of the seven pillars of the resilient child with emphasis on the elementary school years.

The pillars of the resilient child include:

  • Tolerating frustration and managing emotions
  • Navigating friendships and social pressures
  • Sustaining focus and attention
  • Developing courage
  • Building motivation
  • Finding confidence
  • Creating optimism

“My goal is to present the reasons that resilience is so important for children and offer a set of strategies they can use to face and overcome challenges,” said Dr. Lund. “When children can develop tools to become more resilient, they have a foundation to navigate everyday stressors they will inevitably face at school, on the playing fields and beyond.”

Each of the seven pillars of resilience has its own chapter in which Dr. Lund discusses real-life situations children potentially face as well as strategies to help them master and overcome such obstacles. Each chapter ends with a list of action steps which can be implemented by parents, teachers and coaches.

  • Emotional Intelligence Assessment and Consultation

Dr. Lund’s story began at age four when she was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus, a condition in which the cerebral spinal fluid does not circulate as it should causing pressure to build up on the brain. This meant time in the hospital and away from school and the typical activities of childhood. The ability to be resilient from this early age was the catalyst in Dr. Lund’s ability to overcome the challenges she faced and move towards her potential. As a clinical psychologist and a mom, she has had the opportunity to see first-hand how important it is for kids to be able to tackle challenges and move forward towards their potential. Her goal is for this book to serve as an accessible, actionable resource for parents and educators in helping their own children or those they work with to become as resilient as possible. The book has clear application to overcoming some of the most common issues facing our children today – bullying, peer pressure, learning differences and many others.
