For the first time a Guide Dog, trained to guide and work with his blind owner, tells all in a new book, entitled Confessions of a Guide Dog - The Blonde Leading the Blind.
"It's really a memoir of my life with Musket, written from a first-person and first-canine perspective," said Carlson, who has been legally blind since 1998. "It's the heartwarming story about my journey from up the Denial River without a paddle to total independence - and the dog who helped me get there. Musket wanted to tell our story. But I wanted to tell the truth. And we wanted to educate people about the challenges of being disabled in today's society, and how they wen overcame them. The story is hilarious and heartwarming, sweet and sarcastic, emotional and evocative, compelling and compassionate."
"What the book brings to the reader is a sense of understanding about the world of Guide Dogs - how they are trained, what they do and how they do it," wrote one of the book's readers. "It exposes the hidden world of disabilities in a way that inspires and motivates the reader to learn more, to ask questions, to see disabled persons in a positive light."
Another reader, Donna Gudde, writes "Once I began reading I didn't want to put this book down. Mark introduces you to the people in his life so that you feel like you actually know them. Musket's comments are great. A dog with a sense of humor. I found myself laughing and crying as I read. I see service dogs all the time but now I have a much deeper respect for them and the work that they do. Thank you Mark and Musket for a wonderful book. Well done."
Musket has changed lives with his loving personality and inspired other blind persons to seek their independence with a Guide Dog. Disabled men, women and children have benefited from knowing this remarkable animal. Musket not only guides Carlson, he conducts tours at the prestigious San Diego Air & Space Museum.
Confessions of a Guide Dog is far more than just another dog book. It's a tell-all' book, a saga of two lives that came together and made a difference to each other and to countless persons with disabilities. Carlson, who was once a graphic designer, worked for seven years as an Assistive Technology Specialist, helping to edutate and assist persons with disabilities in San Diego to be more independent. Now he is an aviation writer, historian and public speaker. But wherever he goes, whatever he does, Musket is at his side, guiding him and setting an example.
Confessions of a Guide Dog - The Blonde Leading the Blind is their story.
And they're sticking to it.
