(30th June,2010) According to a new research study, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, it has been determined that obstructive sleep apnea more than doubles the risk of stroke in men and also increases the danger in women.

This finding comes from a study of 5,422 people aged 40 and older who had no history of stroke. The results showed an increased risk of stroke in men with mild sleep apnea and rose with severity (of sleep apnea). Men with moderate to severe sleep apnea were about three times more likely to have a stroke than men with mild or no sleep apnea.

It has also been well-documented that sleep apnea is linked to heart disease and diabetes, as well as excessive daytime sleepiness, and increased risk of injuries and death due to drowsy driving and other accidents.

The Somerset Sleep Consultants Center located at 245 Union Ave., Suite 2A, Bridgewater, NJ, has been granted full accreditation by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The AASM is the national accrediting body for sleep disorders centers and laboratories. AASM accreditation is the gold standard by which the medical community and the public can evaluate sleep medicine services. Conveniently located, the Somerset Sleep Consultants Center actively serves the central New Jersey area.

Recently, the medical directors of the sleep center, Dr. Vinette Coelho-D'Costa, and Dr. Jack C. Lee, obtained sleep board certification under the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), in addition to their pre-existing board certifications from the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM).

This Somerset Sleep Consultants Center is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary facility which coordinates medical and surgical treatments of conditions that are associated with sleep disorders, such as respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, ENT, dental, and psychological conditions.
