Canada’s AVIOR Energy Inc., has partnered with the Government of Ghana to provide 2,400 solar powered grid fall back systems in the country’s Ashanti region, through the Ghana Solar Support Project (GSSP), a Presidential Special Initiative. The project is aimed at supporting the energy needs of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs), a segment that plays a very essential role in the Ghanaian economy.

AVIOR’s strong Governmental relationships have been developed over the past three years, during which the company has been developing a 20MW photovoltaic project in the district of Nante, located in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. The company is now leveraging its experience and relationships to enter the distributed power systems market through the GSSP programme. This private/public partnership is the result of several months of research and technical due diligence launched by the Government of Ghana, through the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC), and under the direction of the country’s foremost photovoltaic experts, including AVIOR Vice-President, Dr. Kofi Asante. The systems, which range in capacity from one kilowatt to six kilowatts, provide stable power to users in the event of electricity disruption.

“We are very pleased to be participating in this programme, as it demonstrates Ghana’s forward thinking in connection with renewable energy,” said Jon Sarpong, President, AVIOR Energy. “We believe there is a tremendous opportunity for a significant increase in the number of solar powered grid fall back systems utilized within the country.”

Ghana’s Ashanti region, which has a population of eleven million and produces 96% of Ghana's exports, has recently been affected by frequent power outages which have hindered commercial productivity. As a part of the Ghana Solar Support Project, AVIOR Energy will install and maintain 2,400 solar powered fall back systems for specially selected SME’s within the Ashanti region.

Initiating progress within the last few weeks, AVIOR Energy has successfully installed the first phase of 50 systems. According to research produced by Ghana’s Energy Commission, the minimum national market requirement for solar powered grid fall back systems, micro-grids and other off-grid solutions and will grow to over 200,000 units within the next five years.
