Being Overweight Weakens Perceived Leadership Skills, New Study Suggests

Executive recruiters say that being fit and trim is now a requirement for anyone wanting an executive position.

The Wall Street Journal reported new research on January 16, 2013, suggesting that being overweight will have a negative impact on perceived leadership ability as well as on-the-job stamina. Using data on 757 executives between 2006 and 2010, researchers found that weight does influence performance perceptions. Executive recruiters say that being fit and trim is now a requirement for anyone wanting an executive position.

"Although discussing weight in job hiring situations is usually off limits, it is difficult to overlook in the ultimate decision making process," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).

"Overweight executives, employees and potential employees are perceived as less effective both in workplace performance and interpersonal relationships," adds Dian. "This is most likely the case for all potential hires or promotions. Companies are seeking leaders and employees with good health and physical endurance."

"When it comes to increasing productivity, reducing sick days and rising healthcare costs, companies today can't avoid considering the health and fitness of their existing and potential leaders and employees," says Tom. "Most people today are already time-stressed, particularly highly paid executives. Healthier diet decisions are generally easier to incorporate into a home and work schedule. Everyone needs to eat, but food choices and preparation-both the method of cooking and the time required to do so-can make a huge difference in health, wellness and time management. Being trim and fit does not need to be a big time investment."
