Cadogan Clinic Publishes Report on Its Opinion of Keogh Cosmetic Surgery Review
Online, April 23, 2013 (Newswire.com) - London-based Cadogan Clinic, a leading private healthcare clinic, has published its opinion of the "Review of the Regulation of Cosmetic Interventions" - a research led by the National Health Service (NHS) medical director Sir Bruce Keogh, which increases the scrutiny on those who provide cosmetic surgery interventions and non-invasive procedures such as laser and dermal fillers treatment. The Cadogan Clinic looks into the problems outlined in this rapidly growing, unregulated field of medicine, as well as Sir Keogh's proposed solutions, and provides its professional opinion on the particular recommendations featured in the paper.
The Cadogan Clinic's report includes commentary on the 12 key recommendations outlined in the "Review of the Regulation of Cosmetic Interventions". The healthcare centre supports most of the points made, but also adds its own suggestions on how regulation could be improved. For instance, regarding Sir Keogh's recommendation for an inter specialty committee to be established by the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) to set standards for both the practice and training of cosmetic surgery, the Cadogan Clinic writes: "This is an excellent recommendation, but useless if it does not include foreign surgeons. An EU qualification must not be the route to slip around this certification to key recommendation", states Mr Bryan Mayou Plastic Surgeon and Founder of The Cadogan Clinic.
Another of the key points made by Sir Keogh is that practitioners, such as beauty therapists and doctors who perform dermal filler treatment and the like, should have formal qualifications. As a leading provider of such procedures, the Cadogan Clinic endorses this recommendation and even goes further, suggesting that the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) "must be much stricter in its registration of medical devices and should ban the use of all permanent fillers and better regulate semi-permanent [dermal] fillers."
Amongst the problems tackled in the "Review of the Regulation of Cosmetic Interventions" and commented upon by the Cadogan Clinic's team of experts is the suggested establishment of a registry for breast implants to allow better post-op monitoring. Hosting a leading London breast clinic, The Cadogan Clinic agrees with this recommendation and once again calls for tightening of the regulation surrounding the products themselves. Looking into the reasons for this suggestion, the healthcare centre's report reads: "Unscrupulous plastic surgery high street brands, whose only interest is profit, not patient outcomes, will always look for cheaper substitutes for their clients to maximise profits, putting patients at risk. This is what we saw with PIP's and continue to see with Fillers."
The Cadogan Clinic also provides its expert opinion on issues including the advertisement of cosmetic surgery procedures, the use of financial inducements and time limited deals to promote cosmetic intervention, the surgeons' training qualifications and the process of educating patients on the specifics of particular interventions, as well as other areas in the UK cosmetic surgery industry which the clinic's experts believe need improvement.
