Online, August 14, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Mold is a fungus, a microbe in the same kingdom as mushrooms. There are approximately 100,000 species of mold and most of them are not dangerous, only causing allergies. However, some are dangerous and for that reason we work to remediate mold.
Mold spores travel in several different ways. They may travel through air, in water, on clothes, or on the backs of insects. When the mold spores find a suitable location, the mold grows. These conditions differ between mold species, but they often thrive in dark, moist areas.
Mold spores are present in small quantities in all the mediums in which they travel. Because the spores are in such small quantities, it has no noticeable affect on our bodies. If mold grows however, a large quantity of spores contaminate the air. Normally, people have sinus allergies as the body attempts to prevent the spores from entering the lungs, but in the case of black mold, the body cannot prevent the toxic mold from severely damaging the lungs if exposed for too long.
Mold feeds on dead or decaying organic matter including wooden walls, dry wall, carpet, showers, couches, picture frames, and the list goes on. Most properties include organic matter such as wood or leather and if the property becomes humid for a sustained period of time, there is great risk of mold growth.
When mold appears on a property, this shows that area is suitable for mold growth and like an open petri dish, many species can and will grow. Rarely does a single species of mold grow independently. Accompanying the one common mold, such as Aspergillus, another common mold, such as Penicillium may grow. While most molds only cause allergies, mold growth is a clear sign that a property is at risk for dangerous contamination of toxic mold.
It is advisable to remediate mold as quickly as possible in order to maintain clean and healthy air. Obviously, it is good to maintain a dry property, but due to deficiencies in a property, this may be difficult. If mold grows on a property it is best to hire certified professionals who have training in microbiology and toxicology and are experts at identifying the types of mold and attacking mold from the source. Too often do people remove mold, but they do nothing to ensure the property is dry, and inevitably mold grows again. At Bay Area Mold Services, we believe in attacking mold from the source.
