Clean The World Foundation's Highest Participating Hilton Portfolio Hotel Is In Universal City, CA
The Hilton Universal City is recognized for collecting 8,089 pounds of soap and 5,242 pounds of bottled amenities to help improve sanitation conditions for families worldwide.
Online, December 28, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Recently recognized by the foundation's CEO, Shawn Seipler, as the highest participating Hilton hotel in the U.S., the Hilton Los Angeles / Universal City has partnered with Orlando-based social enterprise Clean the World to collect and recycle hotel amenities to help fight the global spread of preventable diseases.
Under the leadership of Martha Castillo, Executive Housekeeper, the housekeeping team at Hilton Universal City has collected 8,089 pounds of soap and 5,242 pounds of bottled amenities, including soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions and gels. "It is the result of a consistent daily effort by each housekeeper and houseman at ever room to separate these products, knowing the good they will do and where they are going. Many of us have friends and family from the areas that are being helped by this program and we realize that our small effort collectively can make a big difference."
Those collections diverted 55,904 plastic bottles from landfills and created 43,141 bars of recycled soap that have been distributed to children and families in need worldwide because of the sustainability efforts of team members. These fantastic results surprised and delighted the entire hotel team, including Special Projects Manager, Stanley Rodriguez, who oversees the program. "We are very proud to have Clean the World as an environmental partner," says Stanley. "We truly appreciate the commitment they have to the global hygiene revolution. This innovative program takes an otherwise wasteful product and process, and works to make a huge difference across the globe." More impressively, it has put the Hilton Universal City as the number one highest producing hotel across the Hilton Worldwide portfolio of U.S. hotels participating in the program.
Each day 9,000 children around the world die from diseases such as acute respiratory illness and diarrheal diseases that can be prevented by washing with bar soap. Clean the World has a mission to put soap in the hands of people who need it most, to improve hygiene and sanitation conditions, to lessen the impact of disease, and to promote better hygiene and living conditions worldwide. In just three years of operation the charitable and philanthropic Clean the World Foundation has distributed more than 11 million bars of soap to children and families in the United States, Haiti and more than 55 countries worldwide, making them the largest global recycler of hotel amenities.
"Our hotel partners are the driving forces behind our global hygiene revolution," says Shawn Seipler, CEO at Clean the World. "By making a commitment to sustainable, socially responsible programs in the hospitality industry, partners such as Hilton Los Angeles / Universal City are using the leftover resources of soaps and bottled amenities to help save lives."
In addition to Clean the World, there are presently 15 recycling programs established in the hotel that divert 80-85% of total waste from being sent to local landfills. Cardboard, printing paper, light bulbs, batteries, toner cartridges, aerosol cans, food waste, yard waste, and kitchen deep fry oil have all been included in the recycling process. But recycling is just a fragment of the hotel's green operations to protect our land, air, and water resources. Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City also initiates environmentally friendly policies by purchasing less hazardous chemicals for its laundry, dish washing, and housekeeping departments. The hotel has also added energy efficient lighting and motion sensor timers in meeting rooms; installed water conserving toilet fixtures throughout the hotel, and offer a towel & linen conservation reuse program to guests who stay multiple nights. With a team focused on sustainability, the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City hotel continues to look ahead and find new ways to innovate with green practices.
