Credello: How You Can Save on Dinner During the Holidays Amidst Rising Food Prices

The end of the year is a time of fellowship and good cheer, a time when families connect, bellies are filled, and football is a main topic of conversation. Don't expect any of that to change this year, but the price tag for the holiday feasts are going to be higher. According to the USDA, foods in every category have gone up in price, as much as five percent in some cases.

Prices have been rising across the board for most of the year, so this is not a new conversation. If you're willing to spend the extra money, go forth and be well. For those with a tighter rein on your personal finances, here is some advice for you. The following suggestions can help you save on dinner during the holidays.

1. Start Shopping Early

Shopping for everything in one store a few days before you need them will not save you any money. The effect is just the opposite. You'll pay more and run the risk of items being out of stock. Start shopping early and go to different stores, chasing bargains and sales. Canned goods and boxed stuffing have long shelf lives so find someplace you can buy them for cheap.

2. Create a Budget and Make a Shopping List

Decide in advance how much you can afford to spend on dinner and make a shopping list that reflects that budget. You can use local sales fliers to get an idea about prices and even clip coupons. Coupons and store promotions could help you increase the quantity of food you can buy without going over your budget.

3. Modify Your Meal Plan

Be prepared to modify your meal plan. Doing ham or turkey instead of both could be a good choice this year. Add an extra side dish like macaroni and cheese. It's cheap and most people really love it. Cut back on desserts or ask your guests to bring them. It's a meal for family and friends. They'll be okay or even happy to contribute if you ask nicely.

4. Ask Someone Else to Buy the Booze

Your home is not a public drinking establishment, and you shouldn't be expected to supply all the alcohol for a holiday get-together. It's okay to buy a few bottles of wine to serve with dinner and ask others to BYOB if they want to have cocktails or beers. As always, drink responsibly and don't let anyone drive home if they overindulge.

The Bottom Line: Cutting Costs Won't Ruin the Holiday

Following these suggestions will ensure that you have a great holiday and spend less. Serving different food or asking your guests to bring desserts and drinks doesn't take away from the festive atmosphere. You'll still be together, and you'll have plenty to be thankful for. Everyone there just survived a pandemic. That should be worth a toast or two.
