Doctor Points Out: A Healthy Breakfast For Kids Isn't Just About Nutrition
Online, September 9, 2013 (Newswire.com) - According to integrative medicine pioneer, Michael E. Rosenbaum, MD, a healthy breakfast for kids includes more than just good nutrition. He points to research that demonstrates eating breakfast together as a family and reducing morning stress can be just as potent in boosting brain power as good nutrition.
After evaluating data from 1,269 6-year-old children, researchers at University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing found eating breakfast regularly made a consistent difference in how children performed in IQ testing. Children who ate a regular breakfast consistently scored 5.58 points higher on verbal IQ tests and 4.6 points higher overall than children who missed breakfasts.
However while the researchers pointed to that morning nutrition as important, notes Dr. Rosenbaum, "The researchers acknowledged eating breakfast together also gives your child a head start in brain development thanks to the conversations you have during breakfast."
According to Dr. Rosenbaum, this morning talk time helps children:
• Work on verbal skills;
• Kick start their memory as they remember stories; and
• Acquire some general knowledge before the school bell rings.
In addition, says Dr, Rosenbaum, "Minimizing morning stress pays off hugely in how your child gets through the day. Stress shrinks the brain's ability to form memories by shrinking the hippocampus. It also interferes with the development of the prefontal cortex that helps you problem-solve and pay attention."
Stress in the morning can make it harder for children to remember things and behave well in school.
Finally, Dr. Rosenbaum points out, "While stress impacts our adult brains similarly, our kids suffer even more. Children's developing brains are particularly sensitive to stress hormones."
