Dr. Milton Chen, Author Of "Education Nation" To Be Guest On "Mind Over Matters With Dr. Marla"

Dr. Milton Chen's latest book, "Education Nation" delves into the challenges and solutions to get our nation's education back on track. Dr. Milton Chen will discuss his ideas on making this a reality. Dr. Milton Chen poses this challenge: Imagine an Education Nation, a learning society where the education of children and adults is the highest national priority, on par with a strong economy, high employment, and national security. Chen says that the most important step in making an Education Nation a reality is not a greater investment of dollars, but a greater understanding of what this new educational system should look like. Chen's book is his effort to "curate" the marvelous (http://www.edutopia.org) collection of films, articles, and multimedia features from the past few years. He has organized this collection according to what he sees as the six "edges" of innovations redefining schools, teaching, and learning. He will discuss each of theses "edges" on the show.

Dr. Milton Chen is senior fellow and director, emeritus at The George Lucas Educational Foundation (GLEF), a non-profit foundation in the San Francisco Area that utilizes its website, Edutopia.org, and documentary films to communicate a new vision for 21st Century schools. He served as director of GLEF and has been the founding director of the KQED Center for Education (PBS) in San Francisco, director of research at Sesame Workshop in New York, and an assistant professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Chen was one of 35 Fulbright New Century Scholars conducting research on access and diversity issues in education. He served as a trustee of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and appointed to the National Park Service Advisory Board. He serves as board chairman for the Panasonic Foundation. His book, Education Nation: Six Leading Edges of Innovation in our Schools, was selected as one of the 10 best education books of 2010 by the American School Boards Journal.
