Father Daughter Duo Take On Urban Literacy
Online, June 9, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Bedford- Stuyvesant's "House of Ashanti" will play host to Daddy Daughter Publishing's launch event, a meet and greet and book signing for it's premiere literary work and author. With Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn being a "Mecca" for many an author or blogger, what makes this one a tiny bit atypical is the tiny author, she is 7 years old. Amber Benton and her father Ephraim Benton join forces to write and publish Amber's stories under the umbrella of Daddy Daughter Publishing. The book launch and signing event will be held on Monday June 13th at "House of Ashanti" 901 Myrtle Avenue between Tompkins and Marcy Avenues in Brooklyn from 5 to 7pm.
The seeds for Daddy Daughter Publishing were planted as Ephraim would discuss with his daughter her colorful stories. He states "One day I asked her how would you like the whole world to read your stories, and her face lit up" his response "OK, well then Daddy is going to make that happen." Some months later; with the support of friends, family and a Kickstarter campaign to assist with raising funds for the book to be produced DDP has arrived. Ephraim asserts that the stories are Amber's, he is mostly involved for the purpose of editing and these are his daughter's own creations. The first writings a 2-in-1 double sided book offers up, "The Story of Two Best Friends... Nail & Hammer" and "The Story of Bill & His Adopted Siblings...Cup, Blender & Blanket".
Daddy Daughter Publishing, with a focus on urban literacy and parental involvement has many supporters, including Osas Ighodaro, Miss Black USA who will be in attendance and joining in for the meet and greet. For Benton, an actor this latest venture is a labor of love. "The ability to read is what opened up acting to me, it was important to me to nurture her creativity but to also bring this to our community; maybe one more parent will read with their kid because of what we are doing here."
The event is free and open to the public; children are welcome and encouraged to come; books will be sold on site.
