Pasadena, CA-Bare Root, Inc., a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating a nurses float for the 2013 Rose Parade, is hosting a wine and cheese reception, Oct. 12, 6 p.m.-8 p.m. The event will take place at Phoenix Floats-the company hired to build the float-so attendees can experience the level of detail and work required of float assembly by seeing the 2012 floats in the midst of construction. Guests also will have the opportunity to meet Sally Bixby, RN, the first nurse to be named President of the Tournament of Roses and whose 2013 appointment inspired the Flowers 4 the Float project.
"Coinciding the first-ever float dedicated to nurses in the Rose Bowl Parade with the culmination of Sally's term is an amazing opportunity to remind the millions watching how truly committed nurses are to changing lives," said Monica Weisbrich, BSN, RN, Bare Roots, Inc. President. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate nurses across the globe."
For those interested in sponsoring the float, several levels are available, including the option to purchase any one of 12 ride-along spots. Flowers 4 the Float also is accepting volunteers for both fundraising activities and float decoration detail. All of the funds raised will be used to develop and market the float, while the remaining funds will be used for scholarships and/or grants for nursing students. In addition, a queen-sized quilt made by Capt. Maureen Pennington, RN, who is serving in Afghanistan, will be auctioned off this December.
For more information on sponsorships, volunteering and tickets, please visit www.flowers4thefloat.org or call (760) 742- 3144. Tax deductible tickets are $50 and can be purchased online before Oct. 1, after which, those interested should call to reserve a space.
