The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tested the 2013 Malibu Eco to see how well the car will defend passengers from crash impact and rollovers, as well as preventing accidents via the Malibu Eco's electronic stability control feature. The severity of neck injuries was evaluated via simulated rear impacts.

The 2013 Malibu Eco has joined 14 other GM cars as IIHS Top Safety Picks. The Malibu was also awarded a five-star rating by the European New Car Assessment Program last fall.
