Health Disparities and Health Equity Champions Recognized at Xavier Health Disparities Conference

Conference Recognizes Award Recipients for Research Excellence and Special Contributions in Health Disparities and Health Equity

The College of Pharmacy at Xavier University of Louisiana will present awards to recognize research excellence and special acknowledgements during the 10th Anniversary Health Disparities Conference.  The awards will be presented during the John Ruffin Lecture and Awards Ceremony on March 17 in New Orleans.  Dr. Norman C. Francis, president emeritus of Xavier University of Louisiana, will provide the annual lectureship during which awardees will be recognized for their outstanding work towards eliminating health disparities and increasing health equity. 

Dr. Kathleen B. Kennedy, program chair and dean of the XULA College of Pharmacy said "we are pleased to recognize individuals who embody the importance of our work here in the College of Pharmacy. They represent a cross section of disciplines that highlight the significance of professional and community partnerships and collaborations needed to improve life and health outcomes."

Dr. Kathleen B. Champion Awards will be presented to Drs. Janelle Baker-Alcorn State University, Cynthia Gonzalez-Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, and Mandy J. Hill - University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston McGovern Medical School.  These award recipients are being recognized for work and commitment through their vast network and service contribution to the elimination of health disparities and achievement of health equity.

The Academic and Community Partnership Award will be presented to Dr. Ernest C Madu, president and chief executive officer of Heart Institute of the Caribbean, in Kingston, Jamaica.   Dr. Madu will be recognized for his contribution of advancing the elimination of health disparities to achieve health equity.

The Award of Achievement from Theory to Practice will be given to Dr. Paul D. Juarez, Meharry Medical College.  Dr. Juarez is being recognized for his research previously presented at a XULA health disparities conference that has gained prominence for its impact on eliminating health disparities and achieving health equity.

Special Awards of Recognition will honor 1Joshua Group, Atlanta, Georgia; Dr. Roland Pattillo, Morehouse School of Medicine; and Lodriguez Murray, Association of Minority Health Professions Schools for their commitment through communications strategies, policy and bridging science and public health.

 About the Conference The 10th Anniversary Health Disparities Conference convened by Xavier University of Louisiana College of Pharmacy's Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities, Research and Education presents multidisciplinary research that builds collaborations and partnerships to eliminate health disparities, achieve health equity, and create healthier communities. The conference takes place March 16–17, 2017 in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Conference participants will include clinicians (pharmacists, physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and allied health professionals), health policy makers, researchers, health educators, public and community health leaders, and students.
