Honeymark Touts Differences of Raw Manuka Honey

Honey provider describes how raw manuka differs from processed honeys.

Honeymark International, an online provider of manuka honey, is educating the public about the differences between raw honey and the processed honeys sold by other companies. Many consumers do not read honey product labels carefully so they may not realize that honey they purchase has been stripped of certain beneficial components.

Though the term "raw honey" is interpreted to mean different things, there is an industry consensus. Raw honey is unheated, unpasteurized, and unprocessed in any other way. It is collected straight from an extractor, representing the original liquid produced from floral nectar by honeybees. The reasons many people prefer raw honey are similar to the reasons they eat uncooked vegetables. Raw foods contain all the nutritional elements naturally found in these substances including living enzymes, natural vitamins, and bee by-products.

Much of the honey sold in stores is processed honey and may have been pasteurized, which involves heating and rapid cooling in order to change the texture and appearance of the substance. Processed honey is easier to handle and package and may look more appealing. However, it does not contain the enzymes and other substances that activate minerals and vitamins within the body.

Manuka honey is made from flowers of the tea tree bush that is native to New Zealand. American consumers may be familiar with beneficial tea tree oil, another substance from this bush. Honey made from tea tree flowers is dark and has a robust flavor. It is used as sweetener, dietary supplement, and as an ingredient in personal and beauty care products. This unique type of honey is difficult to find and is even rarer in its raw form.

"Raw honey features a higher level of enzymes than that of most other foods but these substances are destroyed during the heating process. When honey is commercially processed, the honeybee substance propolis that contains phytonutrients is also removed. This is the main reason why we at Honeymark sell raw Manuka honey, " reported Frank Buonanotte, CEO of Honeymark International.

Raw honey containing propolis and royal jelly, another bee by-product, commands a high price tag in many stores. Some versions of raw manuka are active, making them even more coveted. These have unique antibacterial activity measured by a rating called Unique Manuka Factor, or UMF. When shopping for raw, active manuka, look for a UMF of ten or higher because only this honey qualifies as active.

Honeymark International is a direct importer and retailer of active honey. Its website offers both consumable and non-consumable manuka honey products, such as candles and bath salts. Honeymark also features a weekly blog offering insights to the honey industry, honey facts, and recipes featuring honey.
