James Maniscalco Comments on Increasing Number of Women Motorcyclists

As the motorcycle industry creates more products tailored to the needs of female riders, the number of women motorcyclists is increasing. Motorcycle trainer, James Maniscalco supports this new movement.

Riding a motorcycle has often been considered a man's activity, and even if women tackle those stereotypes, it has proven difficult for them to find bikes and gear that fit their physique. Despite these challenges, a new report from The Huffington Post reveals that many women are finding an inclination to trade the common four wheels of a car, for the two wheels of a motorcycle. Even better, motorcycle manufacturers, such as Harley-Davidson are making initiatives to include this new demographic and offer products that meet women rider's needs. James Maniscalco has trained several new riders, professional and casual, and explains why many women should try to ride a motorcycle.

Up until recently, many women have had to use motorcycle gear made for men, and have had to make due with bikes built for heavier, taller bodies. According to the article, Harley-Davidson has made the most success out of capitalizing on this eager, but wary market of female riders. It states, "Harley-Davidson, based in Milwaukee, is the market leader in sales to women. The company travels around the country offering training and safety tips for women, including a recent event outside Manhattan's Flatiron Building." Maniscalco says that this corporate involvement is important to encourage new riders, but hopes that these efforts will break other barriers present in the chopper community.

"I support the fact that more and more women are taking to the streets on two wheels, but everyone should feel welcome to take on the motorcycle," says trainer, James Maniscalco. No matter who is pursuing the skill, training is essential for any new rider. As the article states, "Women are generally more interested in formal safety training than men, with 58 percent of women taking a rider course, compared with 44 percent of men, according to the AMA." Maniscalco says these numbers are encouraging, but if more riders are taking to the road, training should become mandatory.

Many of the women that The Huffington Post highlights are working mothers who find the activity to provide a great sense of freedom. Some have spent their entire lives around the machines, while others struggle to take control over the new vehicle. James Maniscalco concludes, "I understand the appeal these bikes have with women, but until they have confidence, they will not be able to fully enjoy the ride. Everyone has a right to enjoy their life -and riding a motorcycle is a great way to relieve stress. If more women see that as the final goal, I believe a lot more will be open to it."
