Kanata Family Dentistry Provider Discusses Avoiding Oral Injuries

Kanata family dentistry office advises patients on oral injury prevention for Childhood Injury Prevention Week.

Childhood Injury Prevention week was observed the first week of September, but the Kanata family dentistry providers at Trillium Dental believe it's always a good time to discuss oral injury prevention.

During Athletics
Certain sports such as basketball, football and soccer are more aggressive than other sports. Dentists offer mouth custom guards strong enough to protect teeth from balls and elbows, avoiding the later need for teeth implants in Ottawa. Chipped teeth often occur during contact sports, and dentists correct these chips with dental bonding.

Some sports have minimal contact, such as golf, swimming and cross-country. A child may still benefit from a mouth guard during these sports, especially if the child has braces.

Patients receive Invisalign in Ottawa to straighten teeth. Invisalign aligners are removable, and children may be more comfortable playing sports with Invisalign treatment over traditional braces.

Mouth guards shouldn't hinder breathing or speaking, and they shouldn't aggravate the lips, teeth or gums.

During Mealtimes
Parents should be wary of the foods their children eat. Orthodontic patients should be especially cautious, as hard foods can hurt braces and teeth. Popcorn kernels are known for damaging braces. Children should never chew ice; ice has chipped many previously beautiful teeth. Teeth are for chewing food, not for opening packages or tearing tape.

Parents should only use dental floss to extract things caught in teeth. Sharp, poking tools can do further harm to children's gums and teeth.

During Oral Care
The best way to keep teeth free from decay is to establish a routine oral hygiene plan. Cavities and decay cause toothaches, and these toothaches are easily preventable with good oral care.

Regular flossing will clean out any food stuck between the teeth. Regular brushing will reduce plaque and tartar buildup, which also thwarts decay. Children should also see dentists regularly for checkups and cleanings. Keeping a healthy mouth now will set the standard for a lifetime of good oral health.

Children with toothaches should floss gently, rinse their mouths, and hold a cold compress to their hurt tooth. A dentist should examine toothaches that don't cease.
