Language School Staff Celebrate Women's Role In Education
Online, May 7, 2012 (Newswire.com) - The school's principal, Claire Woollam, describes her biggest accomplishment so far as 'beating off male competition to become Principal of UIC' and is proud that UIC staff are 50 percent female. She describes a modern woman as being a 'multi-tasker who can juggle working life with a family and still have her own interests and enjoy life'.
UIC Languages' director of studies, Wendy Maitland, believes that women still suffer from gender discrimination. 'Women, in some industries, have to work harder to get the same pay and work conditions as men,' she says.
One of the world's most inspirational women, according to UIC Languages' student officer, Jade Doherty, is an Indian saint known as Ammachi. 'She travels the world hugging people, raising funds for charity, building houses for poor people, and creating schools. She's a religious ambassador for the UN and I think she's a fantastic example of what can be achieved using warmth and care.'
Doherty believes in a harmonious and all-inclusive world - as do all of the staff at UIC Languages. Flexibility is one of the school's most prized attributes, and virtually any language can be studied in almost any city. For example, for those seeking French courses Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds and Manchester are all potential places in which to learn.
