During the pandemic, the FBI has seen a dramatic increase in cybercrime, estimating a nearly 300% increase in cyberattacks. Unfortunately, hospitals and other critical services are not immune from this increase. In some cases, they have been deliberately targeted because of the crisis.

A “CryptoLocker” attack shut down computers at the Champaign-Urbana Health District in Illinois for three days and forced the healthcare provider to pay a large ransom to “unlock” their computers. The US Department of Homeland Security and Interpol have warned that there will be a “significant increase” in cyberattacks targeting hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic.
