Life Remodeled Exceeds Goals in Detroit Neighborhood Makeover
Online, August 8, 2013 (Newswire.com) - In addition to giving away a new house-built in just six days-to a deserving family, Life Remodeled exceeded its goals last week and gave new life to a Detroit neighborhood.
From July 29 to August 4, Life Remodeled, a 501c(3) organization based in Westland, Michigan, renovated 36 houses (24 planned), boarded up over 150 vacant houses (150 planned), and "beautified" 65 city blocks (48 planned), with the help of over 5,250 volunteers (5,000 planned). This all happened surrounding the new house at 700 W. Philadelphia Street.
All of this was possible because hundreds of businesses, community organizations, and churches committed themselves to Life Remodeled's vision of "remodeling lives, one family and neighborhood at a time."
Allied Building Products, Barton Malow, Blaze Contracting, Carrier Air Conditioning, General Motors, Arise Detroit!, and the E.A.C.H. network of churches each sent hundreds of volunteers. Quicken Loans provided 1,500 volunteers, the largest single contingent. The full list of partnerships can be found at www.LifeRemodeled.com/Partners.
To ensure the long-term success of the project, Life Remodeled teamed with the non-profit Central Detroit Christian (CDC), which has been working to stabilize and create positive opportunities in the neighborhood since 1994, and is in the neighborhood on a daily basis.
During the 7th Day Celebration on August 4, Life Remodeled was presented a "Special Tribute" by Governor Rick Snyder, and the "Spirit of Detroit" award by Detroit City Councilman James Tate, representing City Council President, Saunteel Jenkins.
This is the sixth successful project Life Remodeled has completed since its inception in 2011. Though it was inspired by the TV show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," Life Remodeled takes the concept even further with a more comprehensive approach-providing the families they serve not only with a new house, but with essential life skills for a period of three years after the build. Those services include professional family counseling and financial training as well as spiritual and personal support. Life Remodeled also helps integrate the family into their new community.
