Lolarious, Phubbing and Bacne on Radar at Oxford Dictionaries

Oxford Dictionaries reveals the latest words it is considering adding to its dictionaries following the recent addition of Twerking and Selfies

Oxford Dictionaries has revealed some of the words which they are considering for future updates of their online edition. The news follows the recent update which included words such as Twerking, Selfie and Bitcoin, an update which garnered widespread coverage and confirmed people's fascination with the state of the English Language.

In an exclusive interview with English Language blog Wordability (wordability.net), Senior Editor Fiona McPherson has now revealed some of the words which are 'on the radar' and therefore in contention for future updates.

The list is:
Bacne - acne on your back

Hatewatch - watching a TV programme you actively dislike and then chatting to your friends via social media about exactly why you love to hate it

Dosant - a cross between a doughnut and a croissant

Legsie - a step on from a selfie, a photograph you take of your legs down to your feet, often while on holiday

Appisode - a web episode of a Programme

Phubbing - phone snubbing, ie using your mobile phone while you are meant to be interacting with other people

Nocialising - a variant on the above

Meme - already acknowledged as a noun for a cultural concept which is growing rapidly, meme is is now starting to be used as a verb

Lolarious - derived from LOL, a variant on hilarious

Ms McPherson said that on the radar words are a balance between words that are brand new and those those that have been around for some time but are getting sufficient usage to be included.

She said: "Before any word goes into our dictionary it has to be out there and people will know it. Even if they're seen as newer words they've still got to have been in use to pop up on our radar.

"What will always be the case is that they will be new to our dictionary."
