About Departure Day
One week after Howard University officially celebrated its 150th anniversary, hundreds of undergraduates will embark on service projects to 11 cities across and two international sites.
The U.S. cities this year are: Baltimore; Chicago; Flint, Mich.; Lumberton, N.C.; Detroit; Memphis; Newark; New Orleans; St. Louis; and Washington, D.C. Internationally, service teams are traveling to Haiti and Ghana. One of the cities added this year was Lumberton, home of the Lumbee American Indian tribe who were displaced by Hurricane Matthew last year.
For more than 20 years, student-led project Alternative Spring Break has been committed to serving communities in need and involving students in meaningful service. In 2014, Howard University was named to the the prestigious presidential Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The Alternative Spring Break program was a major focal point in this distinction.
