MIME Launches Foundation Shade Finder Amongst COVID-19 Health Concerns

The next generation in artificial intelligence (AI) technology turns selfies into perfect foundation matches, removes need for in-store try-on and prevents unsanitary sampling

COVID-19 Makeup in Retail Environment

MIME (Make It My Experience), a leading global personalization platform for skincare and cosmetics, has launched its new foundation shade finder during the COVID-19 outbreak. With thousands of retail stores closed or not allowing foundation sampling, the tool provides accurate shade matches without a sample - or in the comfort of a customer's own home.

MIME wants to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other germs by removing the need for trying on a foundation and sampling.

Retailers and brands can install the MIME foundation shade finder on their website or mobile app to start providing a highly personalized experience to their customers. Customers take a photo of their face and the shade finder returns the best shades for their unique skin tone. Customers can then filter by coverage, finish, undertone, brand, price point and more.

"Walk down a retail beauty aisle today and you'll see signs for 'Do not sample the products'," says Chris Merkle, the founder of MIME. "It's hard enough to find your true foundation shade in-store when you cannot try on the product, even more so while shopping online - where everyone is going during the current health crisis." For retailers that do allow in-store sampling, MIME's technology extends the accuracy of in-store foundation matching to customers at home.

"Not only can we help reduce the spread of germs with our technology, but our technology and tools can help 50,000+ makeup artists get back to work virtually," says Merkle. "Our technology can easily plug into a retailer's mobile app or website so their sales associates or makeup artists can curate virtual shopping carts for customers shopping in real-time. Makeup artists can help sell for their respective retail brand from their couch."

"The retail environment has changed for the unforeseeable future," adds Merkle. "We want to help keep the customer relationship alive while shoppers continue to enjoy their favorite brands and discover new ones."

Built over the past two years by leading data scientists, color scientists and Ph. D. image researchers, the AI technology is accurate enough to know how a certain foundation color will change once absorbed into the skin - and even oxidizes. The adaptive light analysis allows customers to take photos under different lighting conditions from their mobile devices and provides a confidence score in the match. The technology also provides feedback to the customer on how to take the best photo possible for accurate skin tone matches.
