Neste Oil Share Their View On The Future Of European Refining

Online, February 24, 2012 (Newswire.com) - As the European refining market tightens through increasing competition, Heli Salmenpohja, Manager Oil Products & Renewables at Neste Oil believes continued efforts to increase diesel production while maintaining operational excellence and improving energy efficiency are among the tools to preserve competitive position.

Ms Salmenpohja explains further, "as a complex refiner and with focus on diesel production Neste Oil is well positioned. Neste Oil's cleaner traffic strategy is focused on developing and producing premium-quality fuels that have a lower level of impact on the environment. The company is strongly R&D oriented and has developed many own technologies. For example NExBTL renewable diesel, which is the world's best and cleanest diesel, is based on Neste Oil's own technology".

Clear production strategy and focus for European refiners will remain key in a market where they will "face severe competition from the Middle Eastern and Asian companies, starting new complex refineries and exporting their surpluses to Europe or to traditional European export markets, such as the US East Coast. We expect refining margins to stay stagnant, in particular those for hydroskimmers and would not be surprised to see continuing rationalization in the industry."

The European refining market can remain competitive "but the EU must be careful not to implement legislation, which will overly put local refining industry in a disadvantaged position compared to those from other regions, thus endangering local supply security."
