Patricia Berkly LLC Reflects On A Healthy Workplace
Online, November 26, 2012 (Newswire.com) - As we all return to work after a hectic holiday weekend, we all too often are left reflecting on the workplace we return to. Those who work in healthy work environment might find reporting to work to be a reprieve from tense family dinners, and chatty adolescents. However, for those working in a toxic work environment, the holiday time off is all too short.
Workplace bullying is on the rise. A recent study by Patricia Berkly LLC confirms that workplace bullying is more extensive in higher education than in the general population. The findings reveal that 62% of college administrators have faced or witnessed workplace bullying in the last 18 months. Workplace bullying is harassment which is not prohibited by Title VII distinctions. It is aggressive, belittling and insulting over a period of time.
Dr. Leah Hollis, author of the book, BULLY IN THE IVORY TOWER, was able to capture the comments of higher education administrators who were the target of workplace bullying. "It all stems from leadership....," states Dr. Hollis. "If the boss is civil, the organization will follow but if the boss is a bully, then this bully creates toxic workplace."
Hollis also isolated critical factors that created a healthy workplace such a respect from the boss, respect from administration, and support from colleagues. Everyone has a part in developing a healthy workplace.
