PETROLERN LLC Received Grant From US DOE to Push the Boundaries in Real-Time Monitoring of Subsurface CO2 Plume Migration and Early Detection of CO2 Leakage
CarbonWatch: an End-to-End Solution for Real-Time Monitoring of CO2 Storage Sites
ATLANTA, January 11, 2022 (Newswire.com) - Petrolern LLC, an Atlanta-based technology company, received funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to develop and commercialize an advanced machine learning-aided rock physics model (CarbonWatchTM) for end-to-end monitoring of CO2 storage sites. This new technology will significantly push the boundaries of the current state-of-the-art in rock physics modeling of carbon storage reservoirs and enables real-time monitoring of CO2 plume migration and early prediction of possible leaks from the sequestration formation. According to a reviewer of the proposal, the proposed work by Petrolern would represent a substantial advancement beyond the current state-of-the-art in subsurface characterization, seismic data processing, and decision support for CCS.
"CCS is one of the critical elements for reducing atmospheric greenhouse gas impacts and mitigating future climate change," said Petrolern CEO Dr. Hamed Soroush. "For CCS to have a tangible impact on the climate, large quantities of CO2 should be captured and stored underground. A bottleneck for the deployment of CCS is the risks associated with the inaccurate CO2 plume monitoring. CarbonWatchTM aims to further develop knowledge and technology to better monitor, predict and visualize CO2 plume migration in real time and reduce uncertainties in CO2 leakage detection at early stage."
Director of R&D Dr. Randall Gentry said, "We plan to use the large amount of multiscale and multimodal data available in the DOE database to promote an end-to-end mapping between rock and seismic properties. Key parameters from these models will also be used to reduce the uncertainty in the ultimate reservoir storage cost and capacity. I would like to express appreciation for the contribution from our partners, Carbon Solutions, and Dr. Manika Pradad from Colorado School of Mines."
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $35 million in funding for diverse small businesses to pursue scientific, clean energy, and climate solutions. This investment will create good-paying jobs, build a diverse climate workforce, and help achieve President Joe Biden's goal of a net-zero carbon economy by 2050.
"Supporting small businesses will ensure we are tapping into all of America's talent to develop clean energy technologies that will help us tackle the climate crisis," said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. "DOE's investments will enable these economic engines to optimize and commercialize their breakthroughs, while developing the next generation of climate leaders and helping to build a sustainable future to benefit all Americans."
