Physician Explains How Stress Handicaps Immune System Health

With flu season approaching, people are looking for ways to increase immune health. Holistic doctor Michael E Rosenbaum, MD, points out two significant ways stress destroys immune system strength.

Today holistic physician, Michael E Rosenbaum, releases an article explaining how stress destroys immune system health. With flu season approaching, many people are concerned about keeping their defenses strong. Dr. Rosenbaum shows how one of the most significant ways to fortify immune health is to manage stress.

Plenty of evidence shows stress factors heavily in health. The American Medical Association reports 80-85% of doctor visits can be traced back to stress.

"Contrary to popular belief, stress is actually a good thing in small doses," notes Dr. Rosenbaum. "Small doses of stress like exercise have been linked to fighting off infection more easily and even fighting cancer. The problem occurs when we live with chronic stress. That does tremendous damage to our immune health."

In 2004, researchers Suzanne Segerstrom and Gregory Miller, analyzed close to 300 studies examining stress' impact on the immune system. They found that small bouts of stress - like an exam or giving a speech - increased immune activity and sometimes shifted immune activity from one part of the immune system to another.

However, in addition to these positive findings, they also compiled evidence that chronic stress had a very different impact.

Explains Dr. Rosenbaum, "Chronic stress reduces immune cell counts and causes key immune organs, like the spleen and thymus, to atrophy. In fact, stress is so potent in keeping your immune system down, doctors use the stress hormone, cortisol, to tamp down an overactive immune system."

But stress doesn't just take out immune cells - it slows immune response starting at the genetic level.

In one study published in Biological Psychiatry in 2007, researchers compared the immune reactions of people who were caregivers to family members with chronic illness to people who didn't have these responsibilities. The immune cells of people who were caregivers barely responded to signals that would ordinarily trigger a response. Upon further examination, researchers found caregiver's immune cells had changed at the genetic level from those of non-caregivers.

Concludes Dr. Rosenbaum, "While I'm a big advocate of using effective immune allies out there like high quality supplements, I always start with stress. If you don't tackle stress, you're losing half the battle no matter what you take."
