September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

It is not always easy to talk about prostate cancer. But, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men in the United States. The Saint Elizabeth Cancer Institute is offering two free educational seminars on prostate cancer in September.

(Lincoln, NE) - September is designated as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month to build awareness for prostate cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death in men. One in six men will develop prostate cancer according to the American Cancer Society.

Saint Elizabeth Cancer Institute is offering two educational seminars to educate community members on the importance of prostate cancer screening and treatment options. On Thursday, September 23, 2010 at 6:30 p.m, a FREE educational seminar will be held in the lower level of the Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center. Urologist David Wiltfong, MD and radiation oncologist Kevin Yiee, MD will educate community members about prostate cancer prevention, PSA scores and the latest technological advancements that are used to treat prostate cancer.

Attendees will learn about the latest minimally invasive techniques used to treat prostate cancer by touring the CyberKnife® Center and receiving a close-up view of a surgical robot located inside the Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center. Participants will also have the option to take a PSA test, which is used to screen for prostate cancer, for $12. "Our prostate cancer educational events are focused on educating community members on the importance of testing for prostate cancer as well as the latest advancements used to treat prostate cancer," said Kevin Yiee, MD, radiation oncologist at Saint Elizabeth Cancer Institute. "The presentations are designed to give community members information and give them an opportunity to ask medical experts questions."

Community members can also learn about prostate cancer treatment from their homes by watching a webinar on Wednesday, September 22 at 12:00 pm. Attendees can participate in the FREE one-hour educational event by listening to a medical expert via phone, viewing the presentation on their computer and asking the doctor questions.

Fischel Liberman, MD, director of radiation oncology at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE, will be discussing "Prostate Cancer: Long Term and Late Effects of Treatment." His presentation will cover treatment options of prostate cancer, long term and late effects of surgery and radiation therapy and the emotional and social impact of prostate cancer.
