Sintral Florida Derby Demons 2011 Season
Online, April 6, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Volusia County's very own roller derby girls, Sintral Florida Derby Demons, will slam their way through seven more home bouts in Daytona Beach this year, continuing the season by clashing with the Bradentucky Bombers on Saturday, April 16.
All Sintral Florida Derby Demons (SFDD) home bouts will be at Skate City, 1790 S. Nova Rd., Daytona Beach. Doors open at 5:30, and the action begins at 6:00. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door. Advance tickets are available at brownpapertickets.com.
Along with the April 16 face-off against the Bradenton team, the SFDD will face off against Vandalettes of Vero on May 21; Pensacola Roller Gurlz on June 18; South Florida Roller Girls on July 16; Ocala Cannibals on August 20; and Dub City Derby Girls on September 17. SFDD will also travel to bouts in Vero Beach, Pensacola and Bradenton.
The team has done well so far this season, which opened with a win against the Ocala Cannibals (in Ocala) and continued with another big win-171-114-played at home against the Palm Beach Rollergirls.
Today's roller derby is a fast-paced, action-packed sport played by aggressive women who like their music edgy and their clothes flashy-and who also like to skate fast and bash into one another. While the rules are similar, this is not the banked-track roller derby with faked fights from the '70s; today's derby grew from grassroots movement of passionate athletes who finance their own uniforms, expensive skates, and rink fees.
SFDD formed in DeLand but moved its home field to Daytona Beach last year, drawing more fans to the larger, more visible rink.
"But most people still don't know Daytona Beach has a roller derby team," says Derby Demon spokesperson Lisa "Motown Minx" Lively. "We'd love to get more people to come out and see how much fun derby is."
Derby bouts are traditionally followed by an after-party, where fans get to meet and mingle with members of both teams. The location for the April 16 party will be announced during the bout.
