The Greater Phoenix Urban League Announces The 49th Annual Whitney M. Young Awards Dinner - Together, Powering Our Communities For A Sustainable Future

Online, April 23, 2013 (Newswire.com) - The Greater Phoenix Urban League's (GPUL) 49th Annual Whitney M. Young Jr. Awards Dinner, one of Phoenix's most prominent events, it is shaping up to be better than ever.

For nearly 70 years, the Greater Phoenix Urban League through its fundraising efforts like the Whitney M. Young Awards dinner provides hope and opportunity for disadvantaged residents throughout the Valley. "The Greater Phoenix Urban League helps people in need take control of their lives through Head Start, college preparation education programs, affordable housing support, job training and small business assistance, explained George Dean, GPUL President & CEO. The 49th Annual Whitney M. Young Jr. Awards Dinner, "Together, Powering our Communities for a Sustainable Future," will be held on Friday, May 10, 2013 at the Westin Kierland Resort in Scottsdale. Don Brandt, Chairman & CEO, APS is serving as this year's Dinner Chair. Paul Luna, President & CEO, Helios Education Foundation and Fry's Food Stores will receive the 49th Annual Individual and Corporate Awards respectively. over 800 guests are expected to attend with all proceeds benefiting the GPUL programs and services.

The late Whitney M. Young Jr. was the Executive Director of the National Urban League (NUL) from 1961-1971. His legacy of breaking down barriers to ensure racial and socio-economic equality is continued today through the NUL and affiliates including the Greater Phoenix Urban League. The Whitney M. Young Jr. individual and corporate awards are the highest awards presented to members of the greater Phoenix community who best exemplify the principles and philosophies of the late Mr. Young.
