THE NEXT KATHRYN BIGELOW?
Acoustic ensemble PHOENIX RISING is producing the 'Yin Energy Festival' in recognition of SWAN Day, a new holiday that celebrates women artists worldwide. It is an annual public event that is scheduled for anytime between the end of March and the end of April. The Festival is taking place on Saturday, April 24th, from 10am-10pm at the Hanuman Center in the Castro District of San Francisco.
The Festival will include an opening multicultural blessing, a Haitian dance workshop led by native Djenane Saint Juste, an open mic of poets and songwriters, short films by women, and a restorative yoga class. In addition, Phoenix Rising will be teaching a Native American flute/world drums workshop followed by a concert of their award-winning music.
"Women artists are creating change in their communities and around the world," said Martha Richards, the co-founder of SWAN Day (an acronym for Support Women Artists Now). "This day of celebration will help people imagine what the world would be like if women's art and perspectives were fully integrated into all of our lives. The long term goal of SWAN Day is to inspire communities to recognize and support women artists as a basic element of civic planning." Kathryn Bigelow, the first female to win an Academy Award for Best Director in 82 years says: "If there's specific resistance to women making movies, I just choose to ignore that as an obstacle for two reasons: I can't change my gender, and I refuse to stop making movies."
The focus of the day will be on women artists, but of course all men are encouraged to attend!
