Universal Basic Future Advocates for Universal Internet Access, Healthcare, Income
San Francisco-based Group Launches, Seeks to Re-Define Basic
SAN FRANCISCO, April 25, 2020 (Newswire.com) - Universal Basic Future P.A.C., LLC today announced its political action committee committed to research, marketing, and support for universal internet access, healthcare, and income.
“Recent events have made it clear we can no longer wait to take action,” said board member and entrepreneur Andrew J. Chapin, “COVID-19 has been a great accelerator of societal trends and a painful reminder many Americans don’t have access to the necessities of life in 2020.”
“The government needs to rise to the occasion and offer a basic level of service in our areas of focus. It’s time to re-define what we consider basic.”
High-speed internet has become critical to the basic functions of families and businesses, yet millions of Americans lack access. The Federal Communications Commission estimated in 2018 more than 31 percent of Americans still lack access to broadband. Low-income communities and communities of color disproportionately lack access and millions more cannot afford broadband services. Universal Basic Future P.A.C. commits to support research, marketing, and campaigns to provide a basic level of internet access for all Americans.
Universal Basic Future P.A.C. will also work with policymakers to achieve greater outcomes in healthcare and in supporting universal basic income.
“Our research indicates Andrew Yang is correct when he says more than one-third of Americans are at risk of losing their jobs to new technologies and automation this decade, and that may be accelerated by COVID-19,” shared Chapin. “We further agree a basic guaranteed income will offer families badly-needed stability, encourage entrepreneurship, lower crime rates, and encourage artistic efforts. The positive impacts are clear and our group will find the best way to implement such a system.”
The organization, which launched operations in April 2020, has appointed Gabe Mott of Oakland treasurer and director.
